First introduced in 1996 to fill the void left by the Milano-Vignola, Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli – to give it its full name – made the leap up to UCI 1.1 status in 2005.

With WorldTour teams again taking on the cream of the nation’s domestic crop there will be a fight for honours in an event Italian riders have tasted victory in during five of the last six editions.

The day begins with two laps of a large opening circuit taking in Castelvetro and Ca di Sola to retrace what used to be the finale of the previous iteration of the race.

At the end of two laps the race transitions to the next circuit with 10 further laps of a modified 13.3km course, each pass featuring an ascent of the 310-metre Zappolino climb.

With each lap wearing down the riders there will likely be a battle to see if a breakaway group prevails or the race comes down to a sprint among the strong men.

After the final climb all that remains is a fast descent before a 7km drag to the finish into Monteveglio, meaning there could be a number of attacks over the top – but will they stay clear?
