The Tour of Qatar was Ian Stannard's first race of 2012 and his primary role was to work for Team Sky's sprinter, the current world champion Mark Cavendish.
The week ended with success with two victories by Cavendish, however he also crashed on the final stage but was not seriously injured. Besides Cavendish's two wins the team also placed second in the points competition (Cavendish), third place overall (Juan Antonio Flecha), and second placed overall team.

Ian set his maximum 10-minute power output of the Tour of Qatar during the second stage at 451w. The stage was almost 13 minutes in length and Team Sky just lost out by a mere nine seconds.

Other than the TTT, Stage 4 was the highest avg heart rate, 146bpm, and average watts, 271w, of this year's Tour of Qatar for Stannard. He also set his highest 1-minute power value, 663w, and his highest 3-hour power output of 274w. This was obviously a tough day and Team Sky came through with three riders in the top-10. Besides Stannard's 10th place Juan Antonio Flecha was 4th, and Bernhard Eisel was 8th.

Today's battle was won by Mark Cavendish, his second stage victory of the week. No max power outputs were set by Stannard during this 5th stage of the Tour of Qatar, but that isn't the point of racing. Team Sky came though with the victory and spirits are high entering the final stage.

The big news from today's stage 6 was that Team Sky's Mark Cavendish crashed near the finish. Cavendish seems to be doing OK and initial reports show he is still planning to race in the Tour of Oman.
