Wiggins, who helped Team Sky win the team time trial in his first race of the season at the Tour of Qatar, covered the 10.9km course in 13 minutes and four seconds.

That initially put him in first place but he was just overhauled by Saxo Bank rider Alex Rasmussen who was the only man to dip under 13 minutes as he clocked 12:59.

Colombia's Tony Martin took third in 13:06 while his teammate Michael Rogers is the new overall leader after finishing fourth in 13:11. He has a 19-second advantage heading into the final day.

There was also a fine performance from sprinter Greg Henderson who was ninth with a time of 13:29 and no fewer than five Team Sky riders were in the top 20, with Steve Cummings 14th, Simon Gerrans 16th and Thomas Löfkvist 18th.

Finnish road race champion Kjell Carlström wasn't able to start the stage after picking up a stomach bug.

Löfkvist is Team Sky's highest-placed rider in 10th place on the general classification, 50 seconds behind Rogers.

The fifth and final stage takes place on Thursday and sees the riders cover 161.4km from Torrox Costa to Antequera.
