Geert Steurs won the second stage of the Tour of Qatar after a long breakaway with new overall leader Wouter Mol but the day was overshadowed for Team Sky by the broken collarbone suffered by Kurt-Asle Arvesen.

In the race itself Belgian Steurs (Topsport Vlaanderen) and Dutchman Mol (Vacansoleil) had an advantage of over 20 minutes at one point as strong crosswinds and some aggressive riding caused two splits in the peloton.

The gap eventually came down to one minute and 51 seconds but that still put the pair out on their own in the general classification.

Mol, who cruised home in second, has nine seconds in hand on Steurs.

Roger Kluge took third on the day and overall and is two minutes and two seconds adrift of Mol on the GC.

Mol takes over the leader's golden jersey from Team Sky's Edvald Boasson Hagen who had led home the squad in Sunday's team time trial victory.

Boasson Hagen suffered a puncture with just over 40km to go on the route from the Camel Race Track to Qatar Foundation and came home in 61st position to trail by nine minutes and 33 seconds. Ian Stannard was the leading Team Sky rider on the stage in 27th.
