Tour of California

20 Questions: Danny Pate

Colorado native tackles some unusual topics

Last updated: 4th May 2014

With a marquee stage race at the Tour of California just around the corner, what better time to catch up with one-third of Team Sky's American rider contingent - Danny Pate.

The experienced rider is well known for his sense of humour and had no issues taking up the 20 Questions gauntlet.

What do you do apart from cycling to keep fit?

I like to do some hiking. We have this trail in Boulder called ‘The Incline’. I try to stay active as much as possible.

What is the most heroic thing you’ve ever done?

(Laughs) On a scale of one to 10 that’s probably going to be pretty low. It’s hard to think of yourself as heroic. One time a guy dropped his wallet and I gave it back to him.

If you had a year off what would you want to do with that time?

Having a year off would be pretty nice. I’d still like to travel around. That would be one thing I’d miss from my life now is the travelling around. I’d like to go to a couple of places I’ve never been to. Travelling as a cyclist is not the same. We went to Rome once in the Giro and I was like ‘wait a minute – this is Rome!?’ It’s a place I’d like to go back to.

Would you rather be really really big, or really really small?

I would probably rather be really big. If you were really small you might get hurt.

What is your favourite fruit?

I like quite a bit of fruit. My favourite would probably be passion fruit.

What is the one thing you should throw away but you can’t?

Oh man there’s so many things. I’m a bit of a hoarder. The thing I was asked to throw away last but I couldn’t was my weed whacker. It has a blade that spins on the end to cut away weeds. I've now purchased astroturf and rocks for my lawn. I have no actual grass. But I’m worried that although I don’t need this – I don’t want to have to re-buy it!

Are you a morning person or a night person?

I would call myself a morning person. But people would disagree with that. It’s hard to explain. I’m a ‘when I wake up person’. But some people think that when I wake up isn’t necessarily the morning anymore.

What was your least favourite subject at school?

It’s interesting as I’d probably say history, but now it’s one of my favourites. History was so boring. But I find it pretty interesting.

If you were a superhero what powers would you have?

I think I’d have all the same powers as Kenny Powers.

If you had more time to devote to one thing, what would it be?

I spend so much time doing sport or recovering. If I had more extra time – or if the day had five more hours in it – it might be nice to study something different. I never went to college. So it might be nice if it was all bonus time and it didn’t eat into the time I already have.

Apart from cycling what other talents do you have?

I could tell you what I’m not good at. Budgets and the like. It’s quite hard to name your own talents. Sometime what people think they’re good at they really aren’t.

Do you believe in aliens?

No. Well. I think if there’s aliens already out there I think they are already here. Like fake people or maybe drones.

Have you ever sailed a boat?

I’ve been in a powerboat but not a sailboat. I live in Colorado! We don’t do water.

What would you take with you to a deserted island?

I would probably take a sail boat – so I could learn how to sail that boat and sail away from the desert island!

Which football team to do you support?

The Denver Broncos! You said football not soccer so that counts.

What is your favourite sport apart from cycling?

American Football.

What was the last film you saw?

The last ones I saw were that bad. The last good film I saw was World War Z. The Brad Pitt and zombies movie. That wasn’t so bad.

What is your favourite meal to cook?

Probably Mexican food.

Do you have any phobias?

Heights and snakes. So if there was a snake at the top of a skyscraper I don’t know what I’d do.

What is the furthest you have travelled in a car?

One time we travelled non-stop from Pennsylvania back to Colorado. We were at a race way back in the day. I’d have to bust out the Google maps but it was about 36 hours straight. The funniest thing about that was I didn’t drive one time!
