As well as winning the Chrono des Nations espoir category, he also racked up podium positions at the Tour of Utah, Tour de l'Avenir and Cascade Cycling Classic.

His biggest victory of the season came in Team GB colours at the U23 European Time Trial Championships in Turkey, and his campaign came to a climactic close with a silver medal-winning performance for England in the Commonwealth Games time trial.

The Essex local is relishing the prospect of continuing his progression at Team Sky and is raring to get back on the bike.

He said: "I had a great year with Trek-Livestrong but when I started talks with Team Sky there was never any question whether it was the right move or not. It was a real honour to be approached by them."

Dowsett is already familiar with several riders in the team having grown up racing alongside the likes of Ben Swift, Ian Stannard and Peter Kennaugh as part of British Cycling's Olympic Talent and Academy programmes.

Although his role has yet to be determined, Dowsett is happy to help out wherever he is required and hopes to become a more rounded rider as a result.

"It's going to be a massive learning curve and during the first part of the season I think I will be working primarily as a domestique," he said. "I'm also looking forward to leading out the sprinters.

"As a time trial specialist I obviously want to carry on developing that side of my performance as well, and especially over the shorter distances. Having guys there like Bradley Wiggins, Juan Antonio Flecha and Kurt-Asle Arvesen to advise me is going to be a huge plus and I'm really looking forward to it."
