2013 was a year to remember for Nicolas Portal, who secured one of the finest achievements of his cycling career, not on the bike, but from the team car.
After joining Team Sky as a rider in 2010, Nicolas Portal made the switch to Sports Director 12 months later and guided the team to a second successive Tour de France triumph in 2013.
In doing so, the amiable Frenchman put into practice the knowledge gained from an enviable road career which included a stage win at the 2004 Criterium du Dauphine and six Tour de France appearances.
Portal helped call the shots from the car during a banner year for Chris Froome, with the pair sharing team successes at the Tour of Oman, Criterium International, and Criterium du Dauphine.
Also overseeing a Paris-Nice victory with Richie Porte, the year was special in other ways for Portal, who drove through the night on the eve of the Tour de Romandie for the birth of his second child Aïnoa.
“2013 was a long road for everybody – both the riders and the staff but everything we achieved made it all worthwhile,” he said. “Together we were focused for an entire year - ever since we won the Tour de France in 2012.
“That does not change heading into 2014. It was amazing to be part of such success, but we must continue to stay on the front foot. We know what we are capable of as a team and we can use that knowledge to drive us forward.
“It will not be an easy task but we are motivated to keep improving and show what this team is all about.”
