Sport Director Dario Cioni revealed more about the team's plans for Stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia, which saw Mikel Landa and Phil Deignan up the road for long sections of the day.

Landa led a lengthy breakaway with eventual stage winner Omar Fraile (Dimension Data) which distanced the bunch with 111km to go and was only caught within the 40km marker, while Deignan was part of an elite group which was tracking the leaders until the closing stage.

Deignan then played a key role supporting Geraint Thomas in the closing stages as he battled bravely to maintain his overall position on the General Classification.

Phillip rode really well today. It was a big group so it was good to have two guys up the road.
Cioni told TeamSky.com :"One part of today's plan was to enter the break and Mikel was one of the candidates for this. Considering Sunday's crash on Blockhaus he showed good form, which was good to see".

“And we also had Phillip too, who rode really well today. It was a big group so it was good to have two guys up the road.

“And if the break didn’t work we had some support ahead going into the final stages, which is what ended up happening in the closing stages".
