Egan Bernal picked up a strong 10th place finish at Milano-Torino as he continued his racing comeback in Italy.

The Colombian found himself in the mix at the end of the 200-kilometre semi classic, battling it out over two passes of the tough Superga climb.

Bernal crossed the line 10th after working hard to regain contact with a select lead group ahead of the final climb on the outskirts of Turin.

Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) came away with the win after holding off a late surge from Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana). Lopez’s runner-up finish was made all the more impressive after he was forced to stop briefly following a collision with Damien Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) on the climb.

David de la Cruz was able to force his way back into the front group late on, but slipped back as attacks fired on the steep slopes. Team Sky did a good job of keeping Bernal protected during the oldest one-day race on the cycling calendar and made sure he was well positioned as the climbing started. Diego Rosa and Gianni Moscon made sure they were the first riders onto the climb following a fast run-in, guiding Bernal into position.
