Egan Bernal secured a superb victory to claim the Colombian national time trial championship in Medellin.

The 21 year old star clocked a winning time of 28 minutes and 42 seconds to log Team Sky’s first victory of the season. A powerful and measured ride was enough to claim the win by six seconds over fellow WorldTour pro Daniel Felipe Martinez (EF Education First-Drapac).

The result means that Bernal will wear a custom Colombian skinsuit at all individual time trial’s for the next 12 months. Sergio Henao was also in action and placed fifth against the clock, with an eye on Sunday’s road race which he enters as defending champion.

After climbing off the podium Bernal admitted the victory had come as a surprise.

He said: “This morning I was thinking about not losing too much time. I even looked at who was behind me because I worried about being overtaken, so to get the victory is great!”

“[The national jersey] is very great but it’s also a responsibility to wear this jersey. I have to do well. Here I did well but WorldTour level will be much higher. So we’ll do our best, take it easy, and we’ll see what we can do.”

Results:

1. Egan Bernal (Team Sky) 28:42
2. Daniel Felipe Martinez (EF Education First-Drapac) +6”
3. Walter Alejandro Vargas (Medellin Inder) +31”
4. Rodrigo Contreras (EPM Continental) +47”
5. Sergio Henao (Team Sky) +51”
