Jonathan Castroviejo put in a superb time trial to finish third on stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana as Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing) took the victory.

Castroviejo recorded a time of 38’47” becoming the first rider to dip under the 39 minute mark to lead the provisional field, until Dennis went 50 seconds faster shortly afterwards.

Dennis’ BMC teammate Joey Rosskopf then edged Castroviejo into third by the finest of margins, missing out on second by thousandths of a second.

There were GC gains made by Michal Kwiatkowski, who finished fifth – 51 seconds behind Dennis – and David de la Cruz who both move up a place overall.

Castroviejo was upbeat about his performance, but reckoned the hot weather conditions as well as fatigue played a factor.

He told TeamSky.com: “The legs weren’t as good as they could be, after doing the Dauphine, Tour de France and now here, and it’s been especially hard in this climate as well.

“At the last intermediate split I was close to Rohan [Dennis], but then seeing his time at the finish - maybe I needed a longer time trial! But I was happy with the performance.”
