Jonathan Castroviejo came within a second of victory after a strong ride to a silver medal at the European Time Trial Championships.

Riding in the colours of Spain, the Team Sky TT specialist was just 0.63 seconds behind winner Victor Campenaerts of Belgium on the roads of Glasgow.

Rain began to fall part-way around the course but that did not deter Castroviejo from setting the benchmark time and pushing Maximilian Schachmann (Germany/Quick-Step Floors) back into a bronze medal position.

However final man down the ramp Campenaerts was able to narrowly defend his title from last year, while Castroviejo returned to the podium himself following victory in 2016.

Dutchman Dylan van Baarle was also in action and clocked the 10th quickest time on the day.

The European Championship cycling action concludes on Sunday with the road race.
Result:

1. Victor Campenaerts (Belgium) 53:38:78
2. Jonathan Castroviejo (Spain) +0.63"
3. Maximilian Schachmann (Germany) +27"
4. Yves Lampaert (Belgium) +30"
5. Alex Dowsett (Great Britain) +35"
