Tao Geoghegan Hart pushed hard in the breakaway on a tough and mountainous 15th stage at the Vuelta a Espana.

The young Brit forced his way into a 12-man move during an active opening to the 178.2-kilometre test as the race got off to a rapid start.

Following on from a committed breakaway ride on Saturday, Michal Kwiatkowski was also alert from the start in Ribera de Arriba, with Jonathan Castroviejo and Sergio Henao also trying to get up the road early on.

Despite the gap to Geoghegan Hart’s group spinning out to over six minutes, a committed ride from Astana saw that margin begin to tumble over two passes of the Mirador del Fito.

Heading into the final 25km Kwiatkowski was involved in a crash following a touch of wheels in the pack. The Pole was able to remount and battle his way to the finish ahead of the race’s second rest day.
Geoghegan Hart was overhauled by the bunch as it hit the lower slopes of the final especial category Lagos de Covadonga climb.

The GC contenders then went toe to toe, with Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) jumping clear to claim victory and race leader Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) coming home third to remain in the red jersey.

Sergio Henao was the first Team Sky rider to reach the summit in 21st place, with David de la Cruz finishing nine seconds later in 27th.
