Team Sky are taking a strong team to the eight-day race which features four summit finishes as well as a  a team time trial which Knaven is looking forward to.

He told TeamSky.com: “There are a few challenges this coming week, there is a TTT – a nice challenge, as well as four summit finishes so it is going to be a tough Dauphine.

“Every day you have go for it until the finish – the finishes will be very tough and it will be hard race to control with a lot of mountain stages.”

He added: “Together with Tour de Suisse it is important to get some miles in the legs – there aren’t too many stage races with so many stages in the mountains this race is important preparation for the Tour de France.”
