Michal Kwiatkowski and Gianni Moscon will begin their 2019 season as co-leaders for the inaugural UAE Tour which starts on Sunday.

Kwiatkowski and Moscon will lead a strong team for the seven-day WorldTour race which also features Kenny Elissonde, Michal Golas, Kristoffer Halvorsen, Salvatore Puccio and Pavel Sivakov.

The race kicks off with a team time trial in around Al Hudayriat and Sport Director Dario Cioni believes the 16km test will be crucial for the General Classification contenders.

He told TeamSky.com: “It’s the first race for Gianni and Michal this season and after some good winter training, they will be able to gauge where they are at against the rest of the field.

“The opening team time trial will be very important and will create gaps amongst the GC contenders."

The race also features two summit finishes, with Cioni pinpointing the finish in Jebel Hafeet on stage three as important.

He added: “The mountain stages will be key for GC, with the Jebel Hafeet climb having been decisive in previous years in the Abu Dhabi Tour.”

Chris Froome will miss the race and has taken the difficult decision not to take to the start line on Sunday.

He told TeamSky.com: "I'm disappointed to miss UAE Tour, but I need to recover fully from Colombia, instead of going straight into such a big WorldTour race.

“I wish the boys all the best for what I’m sure will be a great event."
