Kwiatkowski sprints to fourth at Tirreno

Michal Kwiatkowski sprinted to an impressive fourth place to move up to sixth overall on stage two at Tirreno-Adriatico.

Marcel Kittel came out on top in a reduced bunch sprint following a crash on the final lap of the 167km stage to Follonica, with Kwiatkowski, Geraint Thomas and Salvatore Puccio all finishing inside the front group.

Vasil Kiryienka was the only Team Sky rider to lose time overall due to the crash on the final lap, which caused a big split in the peloton with seven kilometres to go.

Chris Froome was one of the Team Sky riders who lost ground due to the crash and he paid tribute his teammates for ensuring he did not lose time overall.

It’s good to get the first day of racing under our belts, G’s looking strong as well and morale is good in the team.
He told TeamSky.com: “It was a sketchy final and certainly for me it will take some time to adjust to being back on Italian roads again and handling the different road furniture and different style of racing.

“There was a big pile up on the final lap, I didn’t really go down but I got caught up in that and fortunately Gianni [Moscon] and Jonathan [Castroviejo] did a great job in helping me get back. 

"It’s good to get the first day of racing under our belts, G’s looking strong as well and morale is good in the team.”
