Kwiato closest in Worlds road race

Michal Kwiatkowski finished just outside the top 10 for Poland in a dramatic sprint finish in the World Championship road race as Peter Sagan (Slovakia) sealed a historic hat-trick

After an arduous 275.5km, nothing could separate the main contenders and Sagan edged Alexander Kristoff (Norway) on the line to make history, with Kwiatkowski finishing 11th.

Gianni Moscon (Italy) threatened to ruin the sprinters’ plans as he bridged to a late Julian Alaphilippe (France) attack on Salmon Hill within the last 10km.

Moscon was the only rider able to react to the Frenchman’s acceleration on the final climb and worked with the Quick-Step Floors rider until Alaphilippe went clear again.

During the Moscon break, Vasil Kiryienka (Belarus) had jumped from the chasing group but was unable to link up with the Italian and Alaphilippe, who was eventually caught to set up a grandstand finish.
