First year pro Chris Lawless is looking forward to his first Opening Weekend as he prepares to make his Team Sky Classics debut.

Lawless forms part of the Team Sky lineup for Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne this weekend and, now back in colder climes having turned in a series of promising early season performances in Australia, he is excited to be involved in the iconic Belgian races.

Lawless said: “It’s obviously my first pro cobbled race so it’s a bit nerve wracking as you don’t know what to expect, but it’s really exciting.

“I got over here on Tuesday night and then did a recon on Wednesday with the guys. It was good to do that, to ride the cobbles again, get used to the narrow roads and just think about how it will be on race day.

“It’s just been about trying to get back into that zone after coming back from Australia, but I can’t wait for the racing to get started now.”

Whilst it will be Lawless’s first pro race on the Cobbles, he’s certainly no stranger to racing in Belgium.

“I’ve been coming over here for a few years now. The first race I did in Belgium was when I was about 15. It’s proper bike racing - everyone loves it. The crowd gets really enthusiastic and the heritage of so many of the races over here is pretty amazing.

“I’m spending a bit of time out here now and it will be a good block. I do this weekend, then go home for a few days training and then I’m back here for a few more of the Classics races. I’m really looking forward to it.”
