Gianni Moscon continued his strong late-season form as he rode to seventh place at Tre Valli Varesine.

The Italian was present in the shake-up at the end of a hard-fought 192.9-kilometre event, and followed the moves as the lead group split apart in Varese.

Seventh comes hot on the heels of fifth place for Moscon at the recent Giro Dell’Emilia, with Team Sky working hard as the build up to Saturday’s Il Lombardia continues.

Sebastian Henao helped kick-start a fresh batch of attacks with 60km to go as the pace intensified. Wout Poels then hit the front with three laps to go, putting in a pair of stinging attacks on the Montello climb.

With the six riders up the road reeled in, Kenny Elissonde was there to ensure the pace was high heading into the finale. It was here that Moscon and Sergio Henao arrived at the head of the race.

Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) launched a stinging attack on the final climb and was followed by Thibaut Pinot (FDJ). Alexandre Geniez (Ag2r-La Mondiale) bridged across and edged out an eventual four-up sprint at the line.
