Wout Poels placed himself into podium contention with a superb climbing display on the queen stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) produced a stunning attack at the foot of Mas de la Costa which saw him amass an unassailable lead, but Poels was able to stay in touch and finished just 48 seconds behind the Colombian

Poels (1’02 behind Quintana) is now fourth in the general classification, with BMC duo Ben Hermans (+23) and Manuel Senni (+42) ahead of him.

Race leader Greg van Avermaet (BMC) struggled on the gruelling first-category summit finish at Llucena and David Lopez, who was the highest-placed Team Sky rider at the start of the day, finish 3:20 down on Quintana to lose his promising GC place.

Earlier in the stage, a five-man breakaway containing Laurens De Plus and Philippe Gilbert (both Quickstep), Lawson Craddock (Cannonade-Drapac), Igor Anton (Dimension Data), and Cyril Gautier (Ag2r) had sizeable advantage leading into the final climb before they were reeled in by a Team Sky-led peloton, keen to position Poels.

This led to a showdown between the GC contenders on the Mas de la Costa which saw Quintana come out on top.
