Wout Poels finalised his preparation for Il Lombardia with a sixth-placed finish against a strong field at Milano-Torino as Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) sealed victory.

Poels narrowly missed out on matching his previous best finish of fifth in the race as he was unable to follow Uran’s aggressive attack on the final climb of the challenging 186km course.

Uran patiently waited for the right moment to attack on the second ascent of the Superga following a flurry of leading riders trying to force a solo break, and was able to move clear of this elite leading group that contained Poels and a host of other pre-race favourites.

Earlier, a breakaway of four led for the majority of the day before being brought back into a reduced peloton with 20km remaining. On the first ascent of the Superga, Julien Alaphillippe (Quick-Step Floors) was able to break free and threatened to stay clear as his lead extended to over 20 seconds before the chasing group reeled him in.

Fine work from Diego Rosa helped bring back the Frenchman as the frontrunners returned to the Superga for the second time, where Uran was able to triumph from Adam Yates (Orica-Scott).

Sometimes you need a race to raise your level of fitness and this was a good chance to do so.
Poels reflected that while the result was not what he had wanted, he was encouraged by how he felt heading into Saturday’s Monument race, especially considering the brutal nature of the Superga ascents.

He told TeamSky.com: “Sometimes a lot of people can go hard once [on the first Superga climb] and then less hard the second time.

"The second time I was really pacing myself and I did a few attacks, and perhaps that wasn’t that smart, but sometimes you just have to race."

He concluded: “Sometimes you need a race to raise your level of fitness and this was a good chance to do so. I hope I have the shape of today on Saturday."
