Wout Poels is happy to be back at Tirreno-Adriatico - a race he has fond memories of.

Poels took his first win in Team Sky colours at Tirreno in 2015, soloing to victory on stage four, and has three top-10 GC finishes to his name.

Now, after an encouraging start to 2019, the Dutchman is hoping for another strong result at the ‘Race of the Two Seas’.

Third overall at both the Tour Down Under and Volta ao Algarve so far this season - and with three top-five stage finishes for good measure - Poels is knocking on the door of his first win of the campaign.

“I really like Tirreno,” he said. “I’ve done it quite a lot of times. At Vaconsoleil I won the white jersey as best young rider, I’ve been in the top 10 three times and I won a stage in 2015 - my first win for the team. It’s got some good memories for me.”

With two-and-a-half weeks between Algarve and Tirreno, Poels has been able to get a good block of training in as he builds into the season.

“I’ve felt good since Algarve,” he continued. “I’ve been training back home with Chris [Froome], Kwiato, Kenny [Elissonde], G [Geraint Thomas], Luke [Rowe] so we’ve had a good block.

“I’ll be trying for a nice result here. G and I are leading so we’ll see how it plays out.”

This year’s Tirreno route has been touted as one for a Classics-type rider, with no mountaintop finish in the Apennines, but that doesn’t concern Poels.

“They say it’s more for the Classics guys but... I won a Classic!” laughs Poels, who won Liege-Bastogne-Liege from a small bunch in 2016. “It looks like it will be quite punchy but I don’t mind that.

“For the team time trial on day one we have a really good team as well, so we will see. I feel good.”
