Without a dedicated sprinter in the six-man team, Team Sky looked to stay alert in a bid to avoid crashes and splits as the inaugural edition of the stage race kicked off with a circuit in Palmira.
After nine laps of action it was Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) who emerged victorious, taking the overall race lead in the process.
With great crowds lining the course five riders went clear early after the Colombian president had dropped the flag.
Quick-Step Floors controlled the race on behalf of Gaviria, with the race coming back together on the final lap. There was late drama however as Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was caught in a crash on the final run-in, 5km out.
Fresh from picking up a Colombian national title each at the pre-event championships, Egan Bernal and Sergio Henao led Team Sky home in the day, riding attentively to finish 13th and 15th respectively.
