Team Sky moved four riders into the top 10 overall at the Tour de Romandie following a reduced bunch sprint on stage one.

A tough day of climbing saw a number of sprinters distanced on the run into Delemont, with Team Sky pushing the pace on the final run-in.

Egan Bernal led the line, sprinting to sixth place, with Geraint Thomas, Diego Rosa and Jonathan Castroviejo all finishing in the lead group.

That ensured all four riders climbed the general classification, with Thomas now sitting third, just four seconds off new race leader Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo).

Rosa holds fourth, a further second back, while Bernal and Castroviejo (both +10”) rose to seventh and eighth respectively. Bernal also moved into the white and red young riders jersey courtesy of his GC position.

Omar Fraile (Astana) claimed victory on the day, after a late attack from Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) was hauled back.

The day’s finishing loop featured two ascents of the second-category Le Sommet climb, and on the final lap Pavel Sivakov came to the fore to cover moves. Thomas also put in an acceleration of his own after Castroviejo had hit the front to keep the pace high.
