Egan Bernal safely made it through the opening stage of the Tour of California unscathed as Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) won a bunch sprint.

Good work from Lukasz Wisniowski, Luke Rowe and Tao Geoghegan Hart in the closing kilometres ensured the Colombian youngster was well-placed in the high-speed finale to the Long Beach circuit which saw Gaviria come on top against fellow sprint rivals Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe) and Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott).

A breakaway duo of Andrei Krasilnikau (Team Hincapie) and Tanner Putt (United Healthcare) spent most of the day clear, but their lead never extended much past a couple of minutes as the sprinters’ teams kept a tight leash on the pair.

"It was a case of staying out of trouble with lots of sprinters here, it was a good opener for tomorrow.
Indeed, they had barely taken the final lap bell when they were reeled in for a high-speed dash to the finish line which Geoghegan Hart told TeamSky.com was the main point of concern ahead of stage two’s challenging summit finish.

He said: “It was a case of staying out of trouble with lots of sprinters here, it was a good opener for tomorrow.

“The weather was good, it wasn’t too hot and despite a bit of cloud, the rain stayed away which made things easier too.

“The crowds were fantastic too, there were so may people it was really nice to see.”
