Geraint Thomas pushed hard to register the sixth fastest time as the Tour de Romandie got under way with a short prologue.

At just 4.02 kilometres the opening blast around Fribourg saw the top contenders covered by slender margins, with Thomas coming home just five seconds back on stage winner Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb).

The Welshman was the first of four Team Sky riders in the top 12 on the day. Diego Rosa went off early to clock an impressive time, good enough for fifth. Resplendent on their new national championship time trial bikes, Egan Bernal and Jonathan Castroviejo finished 11th and 12th respectively.

Matthews moved into the first yellow jersey of the race, edging out Tom Bohli (BMC Racing) by a second. Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) rounded out the podium places a few tenths further back.

The action continues on Wednesday with stage one, with a late second-category climb set to make life interesting on the 166.6km test.
