E3 BinckBank Classic, 204km

Luke Rowe was the top Team Sky finisher in a tough edition of the E3 BinckBank Classic.

After some good early work from the team, Rowe retained a good position in the bunch but was unable to follow the attacks when the big names pushed clear on the Paterberg. The Welshman eventually finished in the bunch, 2:49 back.

Ian Stannard was once again active on the Belgian cobbles but was unlucky to puncture ahead of the same climb, before crashing en route back to the lead group.

Bob Jungels (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) bridged across to the day’s breakaway before pushing on solo ahead of the final 30km. Despite holding a healthy gap, he was gradually shut down by the elite group behind.

The race came down to a five-man sprint, with Zdenek Stybar (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) overpowering his rivals to take the win ahead of Belgian duo Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team).

The Classics action continues on Sunday at Gent-Wevelgem.

- Servais Knaven

“Ian got a puncture just before Paterberg, which is a key point in the race. (Filippo) Ganna was able to stop and help him change but then he crashed on the Oude Kwaremont which blocked the road. He’s okay but he didn’t have any luck today.

“Luke was going okay today but he didn’t have super legs. He was just missing that little bit to be there with the best when it split. There’s no excuses today – the strongest guys were at the front.”
