Danny van Poppel claimed the yellow jersey on the prologue stage of the Herald Sun Tour with a blistering course record.

Van Poppel broke the previous best on the 2.1 kilometre course around Melbourne en route to securing Team Sky’s first win of the season.

The flying Dutchman recorded a time of 2:23:56 finishing ahead of JLT Condor pair Brenton Jones and Alex Frame who both finished a second behind, and the 23 year old was confident of his abilities ahead of the prologue.

He told TeamSky.com: “It was strange for me, I’m usually contesting sprints and here I was sat in the hot seat waiting to see if anyone could beat me!”.

“I have won a prologue in the past so I knew I was good to do a time trial over a short distance and I was really focused on this.

“It’s summer here in Australia and there are some track riders and it is difficult to know who is fast or not.”

It was a first win for me and a first win for the team. I had it already in my mind to win this at the Sun Tour and I did.
